Mtwara

Background

The Mtwara region is the most Southerly coastal part of Tanzania on the border with Mozambique. We have been involved for 3 years in this beautiful area and continue to base ourselves in the ancient trading and fishing village of Mikindani, just south of Mtwara where Livingston made his last journey into the interior of Tanzania.

Our link is with the Anglican Diocese of Newala, which includes the area of Mtwara. The Anglican staff in Mtwara area are good people, friendly and hard working. It is a spectacularly beautiful area with lots of beautiful bays which are sheltered and good for swimming and snorkelling.

We will be volunteering in Mikindani where there are lots of opportunities to serve and to relax as well.

It is a beautiful old village, right on the beach front. The Mikindani area is predominantly Muslim. However there is no tension between the Muslims and Christians.

What We Do

We are introducing our tried and tested projects from Musoma; building water tanks, churches, goat sheds and houses. We teach in the local pre-school and school. We are working closely with the mothers union in the Anglican Church starting up income generating schemes. We are also involved with 3 Muslim villages on the beautiful and rarely visited Pemba peninsula. Last year we substantially improved Pemba’s water supply and this year we will improve it further. Relations are great between the communities.

Volunteers can enjoy swimming in the gorgeous sheltered bay, scuba diving and deep-sea fishing! There is the opportunity of visiting the stunningly beautiful Misambati Marine Reserve, which is 1 hours drive away with the option of staying over night in a very cool, but cheap beach resort.
