Why it is important
More than 95% percent of people living in the rural areas surrounding Musoma use wood or charcoal for cooking. Cooking over an open fire uses a huge amount of firewood, creates plumes of smoke and is very dangerous for children. Children regularly suffer burns from accidents related to hazardous open fires. Women usually walk to collect firewood which also has risks associated with it.

The fuel-efficient stove can reduce the amount of wood consumption by 65%, reducing the amount of trees cut down. It produces less smoke and the cooking pots are stable, the fire enclosed preventing children from being burnt.
